Planting & Maintenance Instructions

Planting
Art UnderPlants™ functions best when used with the same size plant as the Art UnderPlants™ system. Firmly pack moist potting soil into "cup" on top of the Bio Root Barrier and across the bottom of the pot.  Remove the plant from the nursery pot and place the plant into the Art UnderPlants™ system. The top of the root ball should be 1/2" below the top of the fill hole. Pack plant firmly into the Art Underplants™ system, making sure to add soil around sides to fill gaps and voids.

Sensor Placement
Make sure the white cylindrical tip is at end of the sensor tube. Dip the tip into water for 15 seconds to activate.  Take a pencil-sized stake and make a hole at a 45° angle into the soil. Remove the stake and insert the sensor into hole. The sensor tip must be 1/3 to 1/2-way down in the soil in the Art Underplants pot. The part of the tube showing above the soil should not loop, kink or bend. Make sure to backfill soil around sensor, packing firmly.

Filling and Maintenance
Before filling reservoir: Be sure the soil is moist and well packed and that the sensor is placed correctly. Then: remove the rubber stopper, fill the reservoir with clean water until it is overflows; use the funnel for best results.

Check the water level no more frequently than necessary (typically every two weeks) by dipping a stake in the fill hole (like checking the oil level in your car). Refill the reservoir before it goes dry, then moisten the rubber stopper and replace it, pushing firmly with a slight twist. Deposit water-soluble fertilizer into the fill hole per their instructions.

Troubleshooting
A properly functioning Art UnderPlants™ system will normally have dry topsoil, and, after two weeks the water level in the reservoir will have dropped. The soil 1" to 2" below the surface will be moist, but not wet.

Signs of over watering:

Topsoil is wet or damp to the touch.

Solution:

  • Repack soil into the Art Underplants™ pot.
Make sure the stopper is securely in the fill hole.

  • Make sure that the sensor is solidly in the soil.

  • Allow the soil to dry out until the topsoil is dry
to the touch before refilling reservoir.

Signs of under watering:

Reservoir level remains unchanged between fillings.

Solution:

  • If dry, slightly moisten soil mass from the top
    but never over water.

  • The Art UnderPlants™ is a precise watering system that should be used as prescribed.
