Special Project

"Reflection Labyrinth" at Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma, California

In September 2002, Debra Amerson attended her first annual retreat for the Organization For Women Architects & Design Professionals (OWA) held at Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma California. The group wanted to build a special art project to commemorate the organizations 30th Anniversary in 2003. Debra suggested that the OWA build a labyrinth as a permanent site installation at Westerbeke Ranch for walking meditation. The idea was heartily embraced by the OWA membership and she became the labyrinth committee chairperson.

Years prior, Debra had the good fortune of meeting multi talented artist, designer Sue Anne Foster, a recognized Labyrinth expert, during a real labyrinth walk during one of Bobby McFerrin's now legendary 24 hour New Years Eve chants at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Sue Anne was contracted as the OWA's labyrinth consultant and worked closely with the committee over several months.

Later, when the time came for the circular land excavation, a group of young volunteers donated community service hours. This was a wonderful collaboration between the OWA, the Labyrinth consultant, Westerbeke Ranch and local teens.

At the retreat over 55 women from various parts of the world each brought 12 special rocks and helped to lay out and secure the 52’ gorgeous new “Reflection” pattern designed by Debi & Marty Kermeen, which allows two people to walk in, around and out together - the first of its kind in California.
