Whole Foods - Seattle, Washington
Whole Foods Market, a Fortune 1000 company, opened its first store in Austin, Texas, in 1980. Since then, Whole Foods Market, Inc. has grown to operate the country's largest chain of natural foods supermarkets with 130 stores in 22 states plus the District of Columbia.

Project Goal

Whole Foods Market was expanding its region into the Pacific northwest beginning with a new store in Seattle Washington. They wanted to introduce new customers to their unique upscale market. Four months prior to the store's opening, Debra began constructing a pair of 12 " wide x 6' long mosaic tile columns to sit on top of a beautiful wooden coffee bar that was to extend into the ceiling.

The particular celestial motif emerged during a collaboration with talented artist Marsea Illio who was also the interior designer for Whole Foods. Debra created colorful mosaic tiles in repeating star patterns emblazoned onto the columns and cut the colulms in half length wise prior to tiling to create four individual pieces for easier transport. The four mosaic tiled pieces were later shipped on site to the Seattle store on plywood gurneys and painstakingly reattached, grouted and made whole again.

Custom Solutions Provided

deeper greeN was also contracted to provide the interior plants and accessories for the new store. Keeping with the Pacific Northwest location we used natural accessories and subsequently created recycled redwood planter boxes adorned with driftwood edges.

Installing multiple Whole Foods stores over the years has given deeper greeN an intimate understanding of the companies choice of ventilation systems found in all Whole Foods Markets.

All plants were repotted into high tech irrigation systems that provide the plants with moisture as needed thus, reduce the usual stresses caused by over or under watering and ventilation heat. The solid body irrigation systems used are water tight, greatly minimizing potential water damage and easily fit into the decorative containers. The added benefit is the weight of the filled planter/ watering system anchors the plants in an upward position offering stability in case of an earthquake.

Debra working

Debra Amerson designed & produced a line of custom decorative containers including: 100% recycled wood with driftwood elements, wrapped fabric baskets, handmade paper pots and pots adorned with tumbled tile and others with recycled glass mosaic techniques.

The Seattle store is a great success. Stop by and enjoy a unique shopping experience!
